we're heading into detroit. i'm sure the campaign could pack more stuff into the schedule today. in addition to the rally if in toledo where you heard paul ryan, he has three events around the detroit area. this is romney's old stomping ground from his younger days, and they're not quite ready to give up on a michigan where they think they can make a play. he's on his way to an education roundtable and a fund-raiser and another big rally tonight planned. another thing unusual about his speech in toledo was the fact it was much longer than usual. he went 33 minutes or so. usually we get a15, 20 minutes out of him and he doesn't spend a lot of time talking about foreign policy. because the crowd saw governor romney's speech at the virginia military institute, paul ryan wanted to talk a little bit about that and perhaps giving him a little more of a chance to get some of the foreign policy stuff out there publicly. obviously, his debate on thursday with vice president joe biden will be a mix of foreign policy and domestic issues. over the weekend we asked him about his preparations

you know, romney talked about government loan guarantees for post-bankruptcy financing for detroit. he did want to let the automakers go into bankruptcy. i guess he was saying the government could guarantee some loans on the other side of bankruptcy. he talked about some other go. investment in things like energy research that would help the auto industry in that broad, indirect way, but i think he's trying to spin it in -- at least last night was trying to spin it in an inaccurate way. i talked to a romney campaign person in ohio today. they really don't have a compelling response to this point, and what they're trying to do i think is chip away. romney is focusing on a lot of microissues. a nuclear power plant obama said he would do more for. a tank manufacturing plant in lima, i agree. there's some pensionholders who got what they say was a bad deal from the bailout and didn't get a good deal on their pension. they're trying to chip away at it on these micro local angles but on the larger argument i don't think they have a good retort, and i think obama is winning -- i think more

this is what he meant, this op-ed "let detroit go bankrupt." in it he writes a managed bankruptcy may be the only path to the fundamental restructuring the industry needs. the federal government should provide guarantees for post bankruptcy financing and assure car buyers that their warranties are not at risk. in a managed bankruptcy the federal government would propel newly competitive automakers rather than seal their fate with a bailout check. he wanted investments in fuel efficiency, keep the best dealers and make the sales force strong so on the other end of reorganization, you would have a viable industry. nowhere there does he endorse liquidating the automobile industry. the white house has said the industries would wo not survive the bankruptcy process without a massive bailout and a managed bankruptcy. another reminder that the first check to detroit came not under the obama administration, but under the bush administration. you can see why they're still fighting about this, right? this is a topic that really plays in the swing states.
